Winter definitely decided to show up over the last couple of weekends — and as you know, this is the toughest season on roofing.
A quick check now can prevent major damage later, so we’ve put together a short guide on what you can safely look for at your home or building.

Low-Slope / Flat Roofs (These are most at risk in winter.)
✔ What to look for:
- Interior stains or drips — flat roofs usually leak before surface issues appear
- Ponding water after warm-ups (standing water after 48 hours)
- Blocked downspouts (from the ground)
- Uneven or sagging snow loads
- Frost or moisture in attic/ceilings
🚫 Avoid doing this:
- Walking on snow/ice-covered membrane
- Chipping or shoveling snow off the roof
- Clearing drains at roof level
- Inspecting near HVAC curbs, parapets, or penetrations

Steep-Slope Roofs (Shingle, metal, tile roofs)
✔ What to look for:
- Ice dams or large icicles
- Heavy drifting snow in valleys
- Wind-damaged shingles or metal panels
- Frozen or overflowing gutters
🚫 Avoid doing this:
- Climbing on icy shingles
- Chipping ice dams
- DIY sealing in freezing temperatures
