Winter definitely decided to show up over the last couple of weekends — and as you know, this is the toughest season on roofing.

A quick check now can prevent major damage later, so we’ve put together a short guide on what you can safely look for at your home or building.

Low-Slope / Flat Roofs (These are most at risk in winter.)

✔ What to look for:

  • Interior stains or drips — flat roofs usually leak before surface issues appear
  • Ponding water after warm-ups (standing water after 48 hours)
  • Blocked downspouts (from the ground)
  • Uneven or sagging snow loads
  • Frost or moisture in attic/ceilings

🚫 Avoid doing this:

  • Walking on snow/ice-covered membrane
  • Chipping or shoveling snow off the roof
  • Clearing drains at roof level
  • Inspecting near HVAC curbs, parapets, or penetrations

Steep-Slope Roofs (Shingle, metal, tile roofs)

✔ What to look for:

  • Ice dams or large icicles
  • Heavy drifting snow in valleys
  • Wind-damaged shingles or metal panels
  • Frozen or overflowing gutters

🚫 Avoid doing this:

  • Climbing on icy shingles
  • Chipping ice dams
  • DIY sealing in freezing temperatures
