As the 90s progressed Tom Tjelmeland became interested and involved in the possibility of recycling roofing materials. A logical nexus of this involvement was concern for proper and timely disposal or recycling of re-roofing and project debris. A secondary issue for exploring waste disposal capabilities related to job site and crew efficiencies. After extended research, project managers and project foremen outlined obvious cost efficiencies, should T&K completely control the waste hauling system. Many projects were getting shut down while the crew waited for a disposal company to provide empty dumpsters. With the advent of the program, tear off productivity improved 20-30% allowing T&K to be more competitive and pass savings along to building owners. Controlling debris disposal also allowed T&K to implement a waste reduction and recycling program. The following types of materials are sorted and recycled:
- All metals are sorted and sold to metal recycling companies.
- Insulation from under single-ply membranes.
- Certain insulation types used are sold to concrete companies for use under concrete slabs and along footings.
- Other insulation is sold for garage insulation and other uses.
- EPDM membranes are recycled for use as landscaping
underlayment.
- Rock ballast and gravel surfacing is delivered to construction fill sites instead of commingled with other construction waste.
All proceeds from recycling sales are used to create a safety fund for funding the biannual safety dinners and meetings and purchasing prizes for the safest workers.
