Safety Education & Practices
In an effort to reduce if not eliminate roofing related accidents, T&K has implemented an intense safety awareness, training and reward program.
- New Employee Training. Each new employee must view a series of videos produced by the NRCA and general industry safety issues prior to setting foot on a project. Each employee is told in no uncertain terms that we do not allow accidents and do not tolerate unsafe working attitudes.
- Apprenticeship Training. Approximately 30%-40% of the apprenticeship-training program involves safety training. T&K has helped develop this program and has consistently encouraged the union to increase safety training.
- Existing longer-term employees. In an attempt to encourage ongoing safety training, T&K recommended tying all future union contract raises to ongoing training of journeymen, apprentices and laborers. This provision was written into the contract and is in full effect today.
- Safety Dinner. Annually since 1995, T&K holds a safety recognition dinner where every employee that was not injured since the previous safety meeting is eligible for significant prizes. VCR's, televisions, stereos and substantial cash awards have been given away at these dinners. This event also provides an opportunity to cover company-wide safety concerns from the recent months and the upcoming months.
- Appointment of a full time safety and production coordinator. In 1997 a full-time safety coordinator was appointed to work with all crews on proper job set up, proper job completion and overall employee safety. The safety and production coordinator's duties include:
- Coordination/implementation and monitoring of overall safety program.
- Weekly "Tool Box Talks" with employees.
- Review of each project for outline of project safety plan.
- Preparation and Analysis of all pre-job equipment lists to ensure proper safety equipment is sent to each project.
- Project Safety Inspections using T&K Safety checklist.
- Coordination of Workers Compensation Safety Program including claim investigation and injured worker light duty programs.
